You would be surprise how many people ignore weight/strength training when evaluating an exercise plan, especially women, because they think it will make them “bulk up.”
What you need to know is that building more muscle with resistance exercises is an essential part of a well rounded fitness program, especially if one of your goals is to lose excess bodyfat.
A higher intensity in your resistance training will give you a number of positive changes on a enzymatic, hormonal, chemical, and molecular levels in your body, all of which help to slow down, and even stop most diseases caused by inactive lifestyles.
Thus resistance training is essential to preventing common metabolic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, osteoperoisis, as well as other symptoms of aging like declining range of motion, pain and aches, and even prevention of muscle wasting.
How Strength Training Fights Osteoporosis
One of the most effective tools to preventing osteoporosis is weight bearing exercise.
When looking to improve bone density, drugs are the last thing to consider because without questions they are more likely to lead to long term harm instead of benefit.
Bones are amazingly porous and soft, but as they age they often become less dense thus more brittle, specially if we are inactive.
Resistance training combats this because by putting more tension on the muscles they put more pressure on the bones, and they respond by creating new, fresh bone.
Not only that, but getting stronger and building more muscle not only puts more pressure on our bones but, puts constant pressure on them.
When looking for exercises to build strong bones the best ones are compound exercises that use multiple muscle groups. One of my favorite exercises is the Split Squat. It is an exercise everyone can do and is a perfect bodyweight exercise for those of you just starting out, and it builds bone density in the hips.
Not only that but weight training has been shown to naturally increase testosterone, which not only increases your energy levels, but is highly correlated to strong healthy bones.
